Before I start, I just want to say I thought long and hard about this. Lately I started rereading some Aldnoah Zero fanfiction and just yesterday night I watched Episode 0. I told myself that if I found myself disagreeing with Summer 2015 me I would write another AZ review. I reread my old post and found myself agreeing with what I said
So why did I write this if I agreed? I just couldn’t resist. This is a bit different from what I usually do but it’s something I dabbled in elsewhere and thought I’d go ahead and do it for AZ. Also, because this is a series I’m really emotional about, these by episode reactions are going to change…drastically near the end and possibly in S2 (if I do s2). And because this is a rewatch and by episode thing, spoilers abound!
Aldnoah Zero is a mecha story about a young Martian Princess named Asseylum who is due to make an appearance on Earth in the hopes of strengthening ties, however, things turn for the worse when she’s ‘murdered’ on the day of her visit. Taking the opportunity to attack Earth, Martians descend in a race to see who will stand at the top, uncaring of all the death and destruction in their wake.
Meanwhile, Earthlings are left to defend themselves from Martian’s superior technology and destructive power
It could be that I’m just emotionally attached to this series but Episode 1 does such a great job combining some of my favorite aspects of the whole series: the animation and the music. Because Asseylum is coming to Earth as a Peace Ambassador, almost every news channel is going back and telling how Earth and Mars became different colonies and that’s how we learn what the world is like at the moment. It’s a bit of a mouthful considering it’s just the first episode but I don’t mind it too much. We get action and we can see where the story is going and did I mention I nearly cried?
We also learn quite a bit from just this one episode about our three main characters, which I hadn’t really realized the first time I watched it. For a first episode it really had everything I needed and wanted. Random: why are the bad guys/Counts so hot?! (lol)
Also, please Inaho, how can you say that with such a straight face?! I cracked up!
p.s. I kind of wish Asseylum had actually died. I’m curious to see how that would have unfolded (but then that would be a whole different story)
Wow, can I just say I’m loving the fighting scenes in here. Coupled with the music, they’re really hitting me where it hurts. We do learn some more about Slaine’s situation as a Terran living with Martians (discrimination), Princess Asseylum is on the low down, Inaho has made the decision to fight (emotions!), and Lt. Marito is actually pretty good on the field! For some reason I only remember him being scared all the time (PTSD)
We do have our first important casualty and part of the reason, I believe, Inaho decides to fight in the war. I honestly can’t remember too much of what happens next so I’m excited to see Orange!
Damn these Martian Kats are out of this world. So glad Inaho is on our side. And can I just say that Trillram is a bastard? Ugh he’s such a sadist (and not the good kind)!
p.s. I was crying and yelling because Asseylum knocks Inaho to the ground and interrogates him and I’m just, couldn’t you do that face to face? It’s not like he tried attacking her or anything LOL
This precious child!! Ok, so we got a lot of things worked out by now. Last episode we learned that Trillram was part of the whole ‘assassin Asseylum’ plot but here we learned which Count was behind it. We also got a bit of Slaine in battle, and by little I mean he doesn’t want to fight. The one time he is forced to aim at a Terran he only disabled them and even apologizes before doing so (CRIES)
And ok, it’s been awhile since I last saw Inaho in battle. I’m not sure if the others will be as slow as this one but either way I’m impressed. Inaho has his eyes open, using that genius brain of his to defeat Trillram’s Kat and Marito gets his heroic pose when he goes to save them.
p.s. My precious Slaine how did you go from this ‘forgive me’ fighter to s2 (CRIES) And ok, ngl, my kokoro!
OK, I’m going to leave this at three episodes and probably just keep going by threes~
Like I already mentioned, I’m loving it so far. The music is great, the fight scenes are easy to follow even for someone like me who doesn’t like mecha anime much, and we’re slowly learning more about our main characters. Considering communications are jammed, it might take awhile before anyone gets word of Asseylum being alive so destruction all around
