Confessions of a Fujoshi: How I Got Into the Genre of “Yaoi” and My First Ship

I feel like I’ve told this story so many times already but here we go again!

The first time I encountered yaoi was in 7th grade. I used to walk my friend home and she was the talkative type, which is honestly my favorite type of person (since I talk very little). She was talking about some anime stuff and I just happened to stop listening for a little while (darn habit!). Next thing I know she’s waiting for my response and I’m just like Uhhhh, what did you say?

I don’t think she got angry at me, otherwise I’d be traumatized for life, so let’s just say she repeated herself and mentioned not liking the yaoi genre. She told me a little bit about it and how she just wasn’t into it. At this point, details escape me but I just hmmed and nodded to what she told me. I didn’t know about this genre so I couldn’t really make an opinion

However, when I got home, I went and looked up what yaoi was and my eyes were opened

At the time I thought this image and the previous were yaoi but the right term for it is Shounen-ai (since there’s nothing sexual about them). I was in love with shounen-ai and shipping characters. My first ship was SasuNaru and it had to be Sasuke as the seme. Since I knew my friend didn’t like it, it was sort of something we didn’t talk about, but I was a total SasuNaru dork. I started collecting images, reading doujin, writing fanfiction, making amvs, and it was something that spiraled out of control really fast

To this day I still have some of those amvs and fanfictions I made at…what is it…12 years old? Yeah, that sounds about right.

Well, that was how I got to know what “yaoi” was. I’ve always wondering if I would have ever encountered or liked the genre if it weren’t for her. As it is, I’m glad she repeated herself/mentioned it.

And thus, My fujoshi days had just begun (though at the time I didn’t know the term fujoshi existed)

If you like yaoi (or just read it sometimes), how did you get introduced to the genre?
